Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT - MVM - Group of Gas Particle Systems

The research group Gas-Particle-Systems is part of the Institute of Mechanical Process Engineering and Mechanics at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The head of the research group, Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Achim Dittler, is a recognized aerosol expert, consultant to the government of Baden-Württemberg regarding aerosol aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic and member of the Leopoldina working group clean air (2019). The Gas-Particle-Systems research group supplied key contributions on the fundamentals of particle separation in fibrous filters, the layout and efficient operation of pulse-jet cleaned surface filters and the development of aerosol measurement technology, mainly optical particle counters. Results are part of many norms and guidelines and have a wide impact to this day. Current topics of our research are gas cleaning, the behavior of reactive particle systems, further development of particle measurement technology, adaptronics in gas-particle filter technology, the formation and separation of droplet aerosols as well as the measurement and reduction of (ultra-)fine dust. Our strategy combines explorative and basic research with application-oriented technology development. A noteworthy example is the “Filterkonsortium at KIT” that serves as a hub for leading companies of the filter industry, jointly tackling the challenges of an innovative and environmentally friendly dust filter technology on a pre-competitive basis.
