At the core of MANN+HUMMEL’s latest innovations stands a newly expanded and application‑optimized filter media portfolio, specifically engineered for the demanding requirements of Filtration solutions for Industrial Liquids used and generated in machining operations.

There is a wide range of machining processes for which filter media from the MULTIGRADE E portfolio are required. These include Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), Electrical Discharge Texturing (EDT), and Electrochemical Machining (ECM), all of which rely on dedicated filtration to maintain clean process fluids. Mechanical operations such as grinding, honing, and lapping also depend on specialized filtration solutions to ensure reliable lubricant performance and effective particle removal.

The variety is huge: lubricants with different viscosities and machining processes generate particle sizes ranging from 2 to 80 µm. Thanks to its MULTIGRADE E filter media portfolio, MANN+HUMMEL will always be able to provide a tailor‑made solution.

This portfolio incorporates a broad spectrum of filtration materials, including balanced standard and high‑performance impregnated cellulose papers, fully synthetic filter media, nanofiber‑enhanced cellulose composites, and membrane solutions suitable for backwashing systems. The EDM‑specific media family, known as MULTIGRADE E, is systematically classified according to filtration material type and verified particle efficiency, ensuring maximum adaptability, consistency, and process reliability across diverse customer applications.

A paradigm example of this advanced media portfolio is MANN+HUMMEL’s latest solution: “Maximizing Service Life and Efficiency – Innovative New Mountain Pleat Geometry in Industrial Liquid Filtration.” In this solution, the appropriate filtration materials from the MULTIGRADE E filter media portfolio are applied, and the product was officially presented at EMO Hannover 2025, the world’s leading trade fair for production technology. This innovation showcases how filter media and next‑generation pleat geometries can dramatically extend service life, enhance particle separation efficiency, and ensure stable flow performance in demanding Industrial Liquid environments.

In addition, MANN+HUMMEL’s progressive pleat technology, implemented in the innovative Mountain Pleat geometry, establishes a new standard in EDM filtration. This design enables over 20% longer filter service life than current “bestinclass” EDM filters, achieved with only 12% more filter area. Mountain‑Pleat filters offer maximum filtration performance, optimized contaminant-holding capacity, and ideal flow characteristics—all within a highly robust construction.

The company introduces a new generation of filters specifically engineered for Industrial Liquid machining, built on an in‑house–developed nanofiber filter media technology. Field tests demonstrate that these filters deliver maximum filtration efficiency and achieve two to three times longer service life compared with conventional cellulose filter media.

Together, these developments reinforce MANN+HUMMEL’s leadership in filtration technology—“Leadership in Filtration”—offering tooling machining users customized filtration materials that deliver maximum performance, process reliability, quality, and sustainability.
