The next generation of nanofiber-based air filtration: Nanofiber media vs. glass fiber

Glass fiber media have traditionally dominated high-efficiency static air filtration. However, growing expectations around energy performance, sustainability, durability, and chemical safety are pushing the industry to reconsider conventional material choices.

This article introduces a new generation of fully synthetic nanofiber-based filtration media developed as an alternative to glass fiber in HVAC applications. Through comparative evaluations aligned with ISO 16890 efficiency classifications and energy assessment principles, nanofiber-based designs are assessed against conventional glass fiber solutions.

The results demonstrate that optimized nanofiber structures can deliver improved energy performance, lower resistance, competitive or superior dust holding behavior, and enhanced mechanical robustness — all within standard filter geometries. In addition, the PFAS-free composition and absence of fiber shedding offer environmental and health-related advantages compared to traditional glass fiber media.
